David George CUNNINGHAM joined the Group as a Visitor in 2005.

David received his PhD in Laser Physics from The Queens University in Belfast, Northern Ireland in 1985. After graduation, he worked at British Telecommunications Research Laboratories on Lithium Niobate modulators and switches. During 1987 he joined Hewlett-Packard at their laboratories in Bristol UK where he worked in the Networks and Communications Laboratory. David joined Agilent Technologies during 2000 and Avago Technologies in 2005. David has 23 years' experience of LAN/MAN standardization. The Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3z), 10Gigabit Ethernet (IEEE 802.3ae) and Fibre Channel (INCITS T11) committees recognized his contributions to their standards. In 1999, David co-authored a book entitled "Gigabit Ethernet Networking".

Within CPS David is working on High Speed Optical Data Communications and Signal Processing. In his capacity as an Avago Technologies Fellow, and since 2005 sponsored by Avago Technologies, he has been a Visiting Researcher at The University of Cambridge where one day a week he supports and supervises some of the Group's PhD students in the management of collaborative research in optical communications and signal processing.

David is a member of the Society of St Radegund of Jesus College Cambridge.

He has a number of awards including:

1995 Award from IEEE 802.12 for "Critical contributions to the 100VG-AnyLAN standard""
1998 Award from IEEE 802.3z for "Critical contributions to the Gigabit Ethernet standard"
2003 Award from IEEE 802.3ae for "Critical contributions to the 10 Gigabit Ethernet standard"
2006 Award from IEEE-SA Standards Board for Chairing the IEEE 802.3aq 10GBASE-LRM standard
2010 Award from International Committee for Information Technology Standards (INCITS) for Technical Excellence
