Research Opportunities at the Whittle Laboratory

Rolls-Royce/EPSRC PhD CASE Studentships:

Turbomachinery Aerodynamics, Heat Transfer, Noise

The University is committed to equality of opportunity

Fully funded EPSRC/Rolls-Royce studentships are available to conduct research at the Whittle Laboratory in fields associated with the fans and compressors and turbines of aircraft engines. The Whittle Laboratory is one of the foremost laboratories specialising in research into the fluid dynamics and thermodynamics of all types of turbomachinery. The available projects range from fundamental studies of fluid dynamic and thermodynamic behaviour to research into complete systems. Specific problem areas currently include the noise emissions and the efficiency of fans, the effects of real geometry on the performance of axial compressors, the life of high pressure turbines, the design of turbine interducts and unsteady flows in axial turbomachines.  Most of the projects will use a combination of experiments and computational modelling.

The support for these PhDs is through CASE studentships. All of these studentships are for 3.5 years from April 2007 or October 2007 and are jointly funded by the EPSRC and Rolls-Royce plc. For UK students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for the previous 3 years for educational purposes, remuneration will be at the EPSRC studentship rate (currently £12,300/year), with an additional ‘top-up' of £3000/year, and all fees paid. For other EU students, this studentship will pay fees and £3000/ year only. Overseas students are not eligible and should not apply. UK or EU students with a good first degree and a strong background in aerodynamics, fluid mechanics or thermodynamics are invited to apply with a CV to Prof Howard Hodson (hph1000@cam.ac.uk) as soon as possible. Decisions to accept students will be made shortly after they apply until either all of the places are filled or the closing date of Friday 13 April 2007  has passed. The number of studentships is limited.

New projects are always being prepared and so we welcome applications from good quality students and postdocs in other fields of research. In the case of applications for MSc's and PhD's it is also possible to provide funding via EPSRC and similar Studentships (see Graduate Prospectus, Gates Foundation). Overseas students are also eligible for an ORS bursary.

Prospective research students are encouraged to email the Whittle Laboratory Administrator or contact members of staff in charge of projects in which they are especially interested.
