NT11 - Satellite Symposia's

Delegates to the Satellite conference ONLY are automatically signed up for the dinner and DO NOT need to purchase an additional ticket. Delegates to both the main conference + satellite that have already registered can sign up for a satellite dinner by emailing the secretariat (secretariat@nt11.org).

Satellite Symposia dinners will be held in five of the oldest Cambridge Colleges/Halls. Conference attendees will have a chance to see the historical Cambridge and taste the finest British cuisine during a traditional Cambridge Formal Hall. Formal Hall is the traditional dinner held in the Colleges/Halls of some of the older universities in the United Kingdom at which Fellows and students dress in formal dress and often gowns to dine. The nature of Formals varies widely between the Colleges and Halls that hold them. Formals are special events, often with particular themes, to which guests from outside the college are frequently invited. Some Colleges/Halls in Cambridge have elaborate traditions, while others are more relaxed. In few Colleges/Halls, Formals may be held every night, and are simply a second sitting of Hall at which gowns are worn and grace is read. The wearing of gowns at Formals is compulsory at some Colleges/Halls and various other traditions are usually observed, including grace said in Latin or English. The wearing of gowns may sometimes constitute the only dress code, while in other cases formal wear such as a lounge suit is required in addition to, or instead of, the gown. Almost all Cambridge College formal halls include a High Table, exclusively for the Senior Members of the College/Hall and their guests, with students dining at the lower tables. The high table is often raised above the floor level of the Hall. However, recently a few of the more modern colleges have discontinued this practice, in order to promote equality and cultural exchange between Fellows, guests and students.
