Motors for intra arterial pumps

Inserting pumps into the bloodstream to boost flow in patients with impaired heart function is a potentially life saving technique. Developing such devices is a major engineering challenge, involving many areas of work. Recent advances in the design of small electrical machines (MEMs) means that a suitable means for driving pump impellers from outside the blood vessel can be considered. Our research in this area involves using the existing expertise in motor design and applying it to the design of these machines.
