We
are working in collaboration with a group based in the Department of Architecture
to develop refugee shelters for use in cold climates. Tents are often
supplied by international aid agencies for the use of refugees in an emergency,
although they are inadequate when the temperatures drop to -20C as they
do in places such as Afghanistan. A liner has been developed which can
be fitted inside these tents, which will provide insulation to save money,
energy (and the consequent cost to the environment) and minimise pollution
as well as saving lives. Full information about this project and the various
collaborators is available at shelterproject.org.
The next stage of the work is to evaluate the tents, with liners, in
the field to see how they stand up to the wear and tear imposed by the
rigours of everyday life in a refugee camp.
