Power stations are the largest single source of carbon dioxide emissions
in the UK, accounting for about a quarter of the whole. If we can improve
the efficiency of energy conversion, we can reduce these emissions. By
mixing the air and fuel in gas turbines prior to combustion more effectively,
we can also reduce the emissions of nitrous oxides. It is also important
to examine "whole life" costs of the components used to make
the power plant. The research carried out at the Whittle
Laboratory is concerned with reducing the component cost, increasing
component life and increasing the efficiency, thus helping to reduce the
harmful emissions.
