In the UK, transport energy consumption has almost doubled between 1970 and 2004 1, whereas the population has only increased from 54.83 million to 59.7 million2.
The largest increase has been from air transport, which has more than tripled since 1970.
Energy consumption from rail and water transport has fallen during this 34 year period by 25% and 34% respectively, whereas consumption from road transport has almost doubled.
