Multimedia 2020

This presentation looks forward to a life style that will be supported by convenient access to a range of multimedia services. Advanced user interfaces will provide simple intuitive control and enable us to reach the 'information' we need.

Whether on the move or in our homes, offices, schools, Wireless Telecommunications will keep us connected. We will have much better access to information while travelling and will be able to use our time as effectively as we choose. At work, remote cooperation via voice and video links will be normal with the ability to exchange multimedia objects.

Antique Electrical Instrumentation

Are models a fundamental part of science, or merely toys and gimmicks?  This question will be addressed from a historical perspective, considering
representations of the aether. The paper will discuss the essential role of models in the development of classical electromagnetism and ask whether physical models deserve to be placed on a par with more conventional
classes of scientific instrument.

Speaker Biography

Eighth Annual Prestige Lecture - Shopping for the Future

Presenter: John Pelling
Former Chief Technical Officer
Tesco Stores

John joined TESCO in 1987 after 18 years with Lloyds Banks Computing Division where he was Senior Section Manager with responsibility for the Systems Programming and Capacity Planning of the Banks Domestic and International Systems. He played an active part in the introduction of cashpoint machines to the Banking System.

At TESCO he built on the existing computing environment to create an infrastructure which was capable of serving the needs of a rapidly expanding company. The infrastructure also had to be able to facilitate the business initiatives required to achieve the company aim of becoming the UK’s No.1 Grocery Retailer. In 1996 as Technical Support Director he spent 2 years in Europe looking at the challenge of integrating the various business in Poland, Hungary, Czech Republic and Slovakia as well as France.
