Greener by Design

The aviation industry recognises that the environmental impact associated with the projected increase in air travel cannot be properly addresses by it alone. A steering group to examine some of the issues has been set up by the Dept of Trade and Industry's Foresight Programme given the title: Air Travel, Greener by Design. Professor Bill Dawes sat on this committee as a representative from academia.

It has four main aims:

• To promote environmental awareness within the industry;
• To educate the public and government about environmental performance to date;
• Establish best practice in e.g. airport operations;
• To produce constructive proposals that will make a difference to future emissions and their impact.
