Introduction

The Engineering Department Workshops are situated on the main Engineering site in Trumpington street Cambridge. They are the largest and most fully equipped workshops within the University with two main sections split over two floors.

The Machine Shop

Situated on the ground floor of the Inglis building, this shop houses the largest machinery. There is a large selection of manual machines including milling machines, lathes, a jig borer, a planer, two radial drills, a surface grinder and two spark eroders. The Machine shop is also home for the two largest Computer Numerical Control machine tools, the Newall Vertex mill and the Dean Smith and Grace lathe. There is a smaller CNC mill and a CNC Electro Discharge wire cut machine. Situated at one end of the workshop are the flame cutting and welding shops, with a paint shop situated close by.

The Instrument Shop

Situated on the first floor of the Inglis building, directly above the Machine shop, this area generally contains the smaller machine tools. As in the workshop below there is a wide range of manual machines including milling machines, lathes and a jig borer with almost a third of the total workshop area being occupied by sheet metal working equipment. There are three CNC milling machines and a small CNC lathe. In addition to this, located at the end of the workshop is a carpentry shop and also a grinding shop.
