Aerodynamic modelling
Winglets
During manufacture from a sold block and the finished article
Note: The main effect is to reduce drag by modifying the wing tip design to produce a spread out trailing vortex wake.
Nautilus
Note: The nautilus has survived for 450 million years and bears many similarities to the extinct ammonites. This model was made for use in a third year students project to study the propulsion system of the nautilus and of other prehistoric animals.
Perforated plate
Note: Used in the annnular cascade test section of the Aerodynamics Laboratory to balance the large radial pressure gradient induced by the swirling flow of the blade row.
Wing sections
Note: This picture actually shows the material left behind after some wing sections have been cut out of a solid block with the aid of a CNC wire eroder.

Mirror
During manufacture from a solid block and the finished article
Note: Microwave dish to collect and focus the radiation from the 'Big bang'. To be used on the radio telescope at the Mullard astronomy observatory, Cambridge.
Cavity transfer mixer
Note: Used in the plastic processing and food industry for mixing of margarine and other foods by rapid transfer from one cavity to another whilst rotating.
Dental implant
Note: A large scale model of a device designed to be screwed into the jaw bone in order to provide a fixing point for false teeth.
Manifold spacer
Note: Used for experimental purposes to govern the characteristics of the fuel/air charge as it enters the cylinder port combustion area.
