Edwin Pun

Introduction

Dr. Pun graduated with first class honours from University College, University of London, and was awarded a Faculty of Engineering Scholarship to study a Ph.D. degree at the University of Glasgow, Scotland. His postgraduate studies were on thin film Bragg deflection gratings for integrated optics, and demonstrated the first realization of waveguide periodic structures by diffusion process. After graduation, he worked at GEC Research Ltd., Hirst Research Centre, England, and became a group leader in the Compound Semiconductor Laboratory working on laser diodes. He then joined Thorn EMI Central Research Laboratories as a Principal Research Engineer in the Applied Optics Department, leading a team working on integrated optical devices. In 1988, he joined the Department of Electronics at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. In 1992, he joined the City University of Hong Kong and is at present a Professor in the Department of Electronic Engineering. He has authored or co-authored over 200 technical publications and holds 1 patent.

Dr Pun is a Senior Member of the IEEE, past Chairman of the IEEE Joint Chapter on CAS/COM, Hong Kong; AP/MTT/LEOS Chapter, Hong Kong; and founding Chairman of the LEOS Chapter, Hong Kong. He has served on the Technical Programme Committee of many International Conferences, such as European Conference on Integrated Optics, European Conference on Optical Communications, Integrated Photonics Research and Applications, and SPIE Conferences on Optoelectronics and Integrated Optical Circuits.

Research

Dr Pun's research interests include glass, lithium niobate, and polymer waveguide devices, rare earth doped planar waveguide devices, nano-fabrication, and fiber optics.
