NT11 - Satellite Symposium

Carbon Nanomaterial Biology, Medicine & Toxicology

University of Cambridge, Cambridge, 15 – 16 July, 2011

Symposium Organized by:

Scope

The 4th Carbon Nanomaterials in Biology, Medicine & Toxicology Symposium aims to serve this particular area of carbon nanomaterials research and development that holds tremendous interest and potential. The CNBMT'11 Satellite Symposium will focus on the interaction of nanotubes and graphene with cells and tissues in vitro and in vivo, and explore specific applications of carbon-based nanomaterials in the biomedical field. We will highlight the correlation between the specific characteristics of carbon nanomaterials (method of synthesis and manufacturing, purity, type of surface functionalization) and their biological effect in various model systems (immortalized or primary cells, in vivo models). Great emphasis will be placed in determining the therapeutic and diagnostic potential of carbon nanomaterials and the challenges ahead. Moreover, particular attention will be placed on attempts to understand the toxicological and environmental risks posed by use of carbon nanotubes.

Areas highlighted in this year's symposium include:

Format

The Symposium will be held over two days (15 and 16th of July). It will consist of both invited and contributed talks and poster presentations. A dinner in one of the historical Cambridge colleges will take place on the evening of the 15th. The symposium will close with a round table discussion.
