Gas detecting sensors

Dr Florin Udrea

This project which I am working on with Professor Bill Milne, is concerned with the development of novel silicon technologies for the production of intelligent sensors for detecting the presence of noxious gases. In effect we are developing a low cost 'artificial nose'. We are doing this by producing what is known as a 'lab on a chip '. The sensor and the electronics necessary to analyse the gases detected will all be on one silicon cavoiding the smell (Corbis images)hip.

This type of product could be used for both pollution monitoring and control. At present pollution is often monitored at just one point in a whole city but with cheap sensors, it could be measured at the level of individual rooms in a building. Also, by incorporating this type of sensor into a vehicle, adjustments could be made to the engine in real time as excess levels of pollutants are detected. This work links to a major project being conducted on a sentient vehicle.
