Recycled materials as reinforcement for concrete

Dr Janet Lees

fibre re-inforcements made with recycled materailsConcrete is the most frequently used construction material in the world. However, since concrete has a low tensile strength, it is often necessary to provide internal reinforcement to improve the material's flexural and tensile capacity. The reinforcement may be in the form of longitudinal bars or short fibres.

There is a growing interest in utilising recycled materials as short fibre concrete reinforcement and investigations into the use of pre- or post-consumer fibre materials are underway. The ultimate goal of the research is to identify low-cost sustainable means of enhancing the tensile capacity of concrete.
