Transonic Helicopter noise

Professor Ann Dowling

Helicopters are being increasingly used in urban environments, not just for transport, but also for monitoring traffic and by the police for tracking criminal activity. The sound produced by the rotors can be deafening in a built up area. Work is currently under way to analyse the source of this sound using a computational fluid dynamics approach, and to develop the technology to reduce it. Further details are available on the research group's home page.
