Who should apply? We welcome applications from top graduates from good universities around the world with a background in mechanical, aeronautical, chemical engineering, as well as some areas of physics and chemistry. You should be classified in the top 10-20 percent of your cohort in order to qualify.
How will I be funded? (UK residents) Funding comes from a range of sources. If you are a UK-resident with top marks, there are various possible sources:
  • EPSRC Doctoral Training Awards: a limited number of those are available every year. A committee in the department makes decisionson these awards based on the information on your application. You should indicate that you are interested and eligible. Awards are usually made in mid-June for a normal start in October, so applications must be completed ideally by April.
  • Industrial CASE Awards: these fellowships are awarded to industrial members, in collaboration with individual investigators. They are similar to DTA awards, but will be done in collaboration with industry. Applications for these should also be completed by April.
  • Other funding sources: other industrial or government grants are potentially available, on a case by case basis.
How will I be funded? (EU residents) If you are a EU-resident with top marks, the following sources apply:
  • Industrial CASE Awards: these fellowships are awarded to industrial members, in collaboration with individual investigators. They are similar to DTA awards, but will be done in collaboration with industry. Applications for these should also be completed by April. For EU students, however, the grant does not cover maintenance, but only university fees. Often it is possible to find complementary funding via college grants or other sources.
  • Other funding sources: other industrial or government grants are potentially available, on a case by case basis. We often have Marie-Curie network grants, which actually require EU nationality.
How will I be funded? (Overseas residents) If you are an Overseas resident, your tuition fees are higher than for UK and EU students. In many cases, the sponsored grants we have will not fully fund these costs, and therefore you should check out the deadlines of the board of graduate studies. However, you may be eligible for various other awards (Gates, ORS, Dorothy Hodgkin). We do not in general have control over how these funds are awarded, so make sure you get your application in early (i.e. April of the year you would like to start in October):
How do I apply? A few simple steps, but start early:
  • Send us a message writing "PhD application" on your subject line including your CV, references and transcripts so we can tell you whether you might be acceptable, and to let us know that you are applying. Indicate also whether you are likely to get partial or full funding from somewhere else.
  • Send your application in via the board of graduate studies here. Make sure you write "combustion" on your application.
