Dear Colleague,
EUROPRACTICE/Cadence Release for the 1999/2000 Academic Year
With this letter, we (the EUROPRACTICE Software Support Service) are sending you the Cadence release for the 1999/2000 academic year. Again, it is not possible to identify the software with a single Cadence release number, as it was with 97A and earlier releases, since Cadence have divided their software into a number of separate release "streams".
An initial distribution is being made to EUROPRACTICE/Cadence licensees according to
their software holding at September 1999. The table below shows which physical
deliverables will be shipped for each software holding
LDV(*) Box | IC Box | Systems Box | Alta Box | |
ASIC Package | Yes | Yes | - | - |
Systems Package | Yes | - | Yes | - |
IC Package | Yes | Yes | - | - |
Combined IC & Systems Package | Yes | Yes | Yes | - |
Alta Package | - | - | - | Yes |
(*) Logic Design and Verification
One of each type of box has been shipped for the use of all participants at Cambridge.
Licences and installation files, based in a similar way on software holdings at that same date, have been sent by e-mail, and are posted on the web, accessible within cam.ac.uk.
A definitive list of modules in this release can be found at the EUROPRACTICE Software Services web site.

The IC 4.43 media with the QSR2 patch contain the Design Framework ll-based software (Composer, Verilog-Y,L, Verifault-XL, Analog Artist, Virtuoso layout, Cell Ensemble place and route and Diva verification).
The DSMSE 5.2 media with the QSR2 patch contain the Deep Submicron place and route tools (Silicon Ensemble and Gate Ensemble) and the Pearl Static Timing analyser.
The DSM DP 3.4C media contain enhanced versions of the floorplanning tools first introduced with HLDS 3.4B. These are mainly for use with Silicon Ensemble, to control the timing characteristics of small geometry, hierarchical, semi-custom designs generated from logic synthesis tools. The installation of this software can be regarded as optional for IC designers.
The IC Craftsman 4.0 media contain routing tools (previously from Cooper and Chyan), intended to provide better alternatives to the routing in Block Ensemble and Device Level Router. The router can also handle analogue constraints, for example avoiding cross-talk or inserting shielding. The installation of this software can be regarded as optional for IC designers.
The CCTrans 2.0 media contain translators between IC Craftsman and LEF, DEF, EDIF and GDSII.
The PE13.5 media contain PCB/MCM design tools from the Concept/Allegro family (Concept, Verilog, Leapfrog, Logic/Analog Workbench, Allegro, Thermax, SigNoise and EMC).
The SPECCTRA 8.0 media contain a shaped-based PCBIMCM router (previously from Cooper and Chyan) for use with Allegro.
The BONES Designer 4.0 with its ISR and SPW 4.1 media with patches contain tools for designing algorithms and studying real-time performance of systems, especially communications, multimedia and image- and signal-processing applications.
Note: When making an ASIC-only or a DRACULA-only installation, the licensed EUROPRACTICE tools all come from the IC 4.43 media and there is no need to install from the DSM DP or IC Craftsman media sets.
With the LDV 2.1 stream, the following tools have been added:
The BuildGates 2.3 ASIC Synthesis tool replaces Synergy which is no longer available in this release.
For the EUROPRACTICE IC Package, the main additions from the IC 4.43 stream are:
As indicated previously, STL and Veritime have been dropped. VeriSure and VHDLCover have had to be removed because they were third party products which Cadence no longer sells.
The DSMSE 5.2 stream contains Silicon/Gate Ensemble engines with improved placement and routing ("Ultra") algorithms and the capability to route in more metal layers. A new Graphical user interface for Pearl is also available.
The DSM DP 3.4C floorplanning tools are now more consistent with the place and route tools in terms of placement algorithms and delay calculation.
IC Craftsman 4.0 now uses the normal Cadence installation and licensing mechanisms and has better interfaces to Design Framework Il.
For the EUROPRACTICE/Systems Package, Concept HDL-style tools are now available for both digital and analogue design but not yet for mixed-signal. A new, third-party tool, Power Plane Builder, is also included for use with Allegro.
The SPECCTRA 8.0 now uses the normal Cadence installation and licensing mechanisms and has better interfaces to Allegro.
There are no new tools in the EUROPRACTICE/DRACULA Package. The situation with Vampire remains unchanged. It is rather a specialist tool which may be withdrawn from future EUROPRACTICE releases.
For the EUROPRACTICE/Alta Package, bug-fixes are included for both BONES and SPW. A tool-kit and library for CDMA are available in SPW for the first time in this release. BONES Designer will be frozen at this release and will not be available in subsequent releases. More details will be available through the Web-site (see below).
The definitive list of modules in each of the EUROPRACTICE Packages in this release can be found on our Web-site, by starting at the home page at URL
http://www.te.rl.ac.uk/europractice/
and following the links to the relevant EUROPRACTICE/Cadence pages.
SunOS 4 is no longer supported in this release.
To be compatible with the largest number of tools across the IC, Systems and Alta flows, one of the following operating system revisions should be used:
Please note that some of the PE 13.5 and SPECCTRA 8.0 tools are now also supported under Windows NT 4.
We would like to remind you that the conditions of the EUROPRACTICE Agreement, which your institution has signed, do not allow you to contact Cadence directly for support and do not currently include the right for individual institutions to have access to Cadence's Web-based support service, SourceLink.
Instead, all enquiries should be addressed us (the EUROPRACTICE Software Support Service) through one of the contact points given in the letterhead. We have access to Cadence's technical support and SourceLink on your behalf. Normally, we will obtain patches to fix the specific bugs which you have experienced rather than distributing additional QSRs which attempt to fix all possible problems.
Please see "Obtaining Supplementary Installation Information" for up-to-date guidance on software installation.
