Professor Gehan Amaratunga is the Group Leader of the Electronics, Power and Energy Conversion (EPEC) Research Group, Electrical Engineering Division, Cambridge University Engineering Department. He is also a Fellow of Churchill College, Cambridge. He has published over 450 research articles in journals and conference proceedings. Professor Amaratunga is a Fellow of the Institute of Electrical Engineers and a Chartered Engineer. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Academy of Engineering in 2004. Then in 2007 he was awarded the Royal Academy of Engineering Silver Medal 'for outstanding personal contributions to British Engineering'. Research interests include: Nanoscale materials and device design for electronics and energy conversion. Novel materials and device structures for low cost, high efficiently solar cells. Power electronics for optimum grid connection of large photovoltaic electric generation systems. Integrated and discrete semiconductor devices for power switching and control.

Dr Coombs is a Senior Lecturer in The Cambridge University Engineering Department. He is in the Engineering Power Group in the Electrical Engineering Division and is also attached to the Interdisciplinary Research Centre in Superconductivity. He is a Fellow of Magdalene College. The Electrical Power and Energy Conversion Group has currently 6 permanent academic staff, 7 research associates and 28 research students. Dr Patrick Palmer Reader

Patrick Palmer joined the teaching staff of the Department of Engineering in 1985. He is now Reader in Electrical Engineering. His principle research is in the design, characterisation and use of power semiconductor devices. He has over 100 publications in the area and has current research in the use of high voltage IGBTs connected in series, the characterisation of IGBTs and the computer simulation and optimisation of IGBTs and diodes. He also has an active interest in the computer simulation of multi-disciplinary systems, including resonant power electronic circuits, captive power systems and fuel cells. He has patents on novel MOS gated devices and MOS gate drives.
