Environmental engineering

Environmental engineering, the subject of a new course offered to third-year students for the first time this year, is a major challenge facing today's engineers. Organised by Dr Chrysanthi Savvidou, the course will cover various aspects of pollution migration and transport processes which need to be studied for applications including groundwater and river pollution, migration of pollutants away from landfill sites, and remediation of contaminated land caused by oil spillage or other pollutants such as heavy metals.

Aspects of fluid mechanics and river pollution will be taught by Drs John Sleath and Rex Britter. A new lab for experimental studies and analysis of transport processes in soil has been established with substantial University support. The lab will provide major experimental facilities for undergraduate teaching and projects as well as research activities.
