New Partnership with Rolls-Royce plc

A new partnership between the Department of Engineering and Rolls-Royce plc has been announced in the form of the University Gas Turbine Partnership (UGTP). This expands the Department's collaboration with Rolls-Royce plc who have for many years been major funders of research in the Department, particularly at the Whittle Laboratory. The remit of the UGTP is to enhance fundamental understanding and to develop an integrated approach to the thermodynamics and fluid mechanics of gas turbines.

The first Director of the UGTP is Professor Ann Dowling. "This partnership is the result of many years of collaboration with Rolls-Royce, and demonstrates their confidence in the outstanding research coming out of this Department. We have always had plenty of ideas for research, but need more people to carry them forward. Under the UGTP Agreement, Rolls-Royce plc will help us expand our activities by funding two Professorships in the Department, together with Lectureships in related areas. The UGTP also enables us to make long term plans and to provide more job security to research associates and technicians. We have a number of new and exciting projects lined up, including research into novel forms of clean combustion."
