Welcome to the home page for the West Cambridge BDFIG research wind turbine. Here you can find information about the project, check the current status of the turbine, and contact the project group.

This project is the world's first practical implementation of the Brushless Doubly-Fed Induction Generator (BDFIG)as a generator for wind power.

The turbine is situated on Cambridge University's West Cambridge site and is rated at 20kW.

The generator technology results from research carried out in the Renewables Group in the Electrical Engineering Division, Cambridge University Engineering Department.

The research is led by Dr Richard McMahon, in cooperation with Prof Peter Tavner, Head of Engineering School, Durham University.

The project is supported by the following organisations:

Wind Technologies Ltd

The East of England Development Agency (EEDA)

Renewables East
