Prospective graduate students should apply for some scholarships to support them, and pay their fees. Bill Gates has very generously created a scholarship scheme which aims to provide for engineers and scientists in Cambridge what the Rhodes' Scholarships offer to students of the humanities in Oxford. All outstanding overseas candidates are encouraged to apply, but citizens of the USA should note that half of the 225 available scholarships are reserved for them!
There are many other scholarship schemes reserved for Cambridge applicants, and which have been created to serve particular nationalities. For example, India benefits from the Nehru Scholarships which are administered through the Cambridge Commonwealth Trust which also provides equivalent funds for students from any other Commonwealth countries. The Cambridge Overseas Trust provides a similar service for all other overseas applicants. The Graduate Prospectus lists many other country-specific scholarships. Most of these schemes require you simultaneously to be an applicant for one of the UK Universities' ORS (Overseas Research Students) awards which pay the difference between "overseas" and "home" fees. European Union applicants are eligible for the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) studentships. There are two types - project awards which are tied to a particular research grant, and quota awards which are donated without ties on the basis of our research track record. Quota awards are available to excellent EU graduates, and outstanding candidates may be sent an offer well in advance of the normal mid-summer competition. Finally, if you find you are not specially eligible for other funds, you could try applying for a studentship from one of the Colleges. All candidates need to pick a College to live in anyway, so you will all need to browse those web-pages too! If you can not easily choose, you might as well look at which College has attracted the affiliation of one of your potential supervisors. Do not forget that you may be eligible for national scholarships back home. The Commonwealth Scholarship scheme, for example, is open to citizens of the Commonwealth countries, in open competition amongst candidates for any field of study at any University. In all these cases the first step is to read the Graduate Prospectus. Here you will find the step-by-step process of applying, together with information on living in Cambridge, including what the Colleges have to offer and the cost of it all. Then request the application form, fill it in, send it back to the Board of Graduate Studies, and at the same time ask your referees to send independent references (also to Board of Graduate Studies (BoGS)). Try to get your application in at least 9 months, preferably one year ahead of your desired starting date, mindful of the closing dates for scholarship applications which may be as early as October in the year preceding the year of entry. |
