The Engineering Department of Cambridge University is situated behind the Royal Cambridge Hotel on Trumpington Street, about 10 minutes walk from the city centre and the Bus Station (bus timetables here) on Drummer Street, and twenty minutes walk from the Railway Station. If you get lost at any stage ask for directions to the Fitzwilliam Musuem or the Royal Cambridge Hotel (both well-known Cambridge landmarks). The Department is between the two.

A searchable street map of central Cambridge is also available.

Travelling by rail

There is a frequent rail service to London (King's Cross and Liverpool Street) and good cross country links with timetables. Information on all forms of public transport can also be found at UK Public Transport Information.

The railway station is about 20 minutes walk, or a short taxi ride. To walk, go down Station Road; turn right at the War Memorial into Hills Road. Turn left at the traffic lights outside the (large) Catholic Church into Lensfield Road. At the end of Lensfield Road, turn right at the mini-roundabout. Across the road you will see a large steel statue. This is the entrance to the Department.

Travelling by road

Please note that there is very limited parking on site. The CUED member of staff that you are visiting may be able to arrange a parking space if sufficient notice is given. If such a space has been booked for you, check in with Reception on arrival and they will tell you which parking bay to use.

Cars will be wheel-clamped if parked on site without permission.

From the South (M11 and A10)

Leave the M11 at junction 11, drive towards Cambridge on the A1309 (continuation of A10). Go straight through the village of Trumpington and straight on at the traffic lights at the junctions with Long Road and Brooklands Avenue. Trumpington Street continues straight over the two mini-roundabouts and the Department is immediately on your left (before the pedestrian crossing). There is a steel statue at the end of the driveway. (Alternatively continue on the M11 to junction 12 and follow the directions given below.)

From the North, East and West (A14, M11)

From the A14 (both directions) join the M11. Leave at junction 12. Drive towards Cambridge A603, Barton Road. Follow the signs to the city centre along Barton Road, following the sharp bend to the left into Newnham Road, then turn right at the roundabout into Fen Causeway. Turn left at the first mini-roundabout and straight over at the second. You are in Trumpington Street and the Department is immediately on your left (before the pedestrian crossing). There is a steel statue at the end of the driveway.

Parking

Short-term parking is sometimes available in nearby Trumpington Street, where there is a pay and display system.

There are various car parks which can be expensive, and the City Council operates a Park&Ride scheme on some of the main roads into the City. It is also possible to park off Barton Road and then walk to the Department.

Travelling by Coach

National Express run regular coach services from London Victoria and other destinations to the Drummer Street bus station. There are also regular coach services to London airports (see below).

Travelling by Air

The nearest airport is London Stansted, from where Go and RyanAir offer services to many UK and European destinations. Easyjet offer services to European cities from London Luton. Telephone numbers for the nearest airports may be useful. There are regular buses from Stansted (journey time approx. 50 mins), Heathrow (approx. 2hrs 10 mins), Gatwick (approx, 3hrs 30 mins) and Luton airports to Cambridge bus station.

The Current Cambridge Weather Site has readings of weather taken from the top of the Olivetti Research Laboratory building nearby in Trumpington Street.

If you are planning to stay overnight, information on some of the (more expensive/luxurious) hotels is available, together with a map of how to locate them. The Royal Cambridge is immediately in front of the Department in Trumpington Street.

Information on other accommodation is also available.
