December '98

In brief...

In January 1998, a team of 15 assessors was with us for one week to carry out a Teaching Quality Assessment of the department. We were delighted to receive 23 out of 24 points, adding to Cambridge University's impressive overall record of TQA results. Our extensive preparations were led by Dr Martin Cowley and Mr Ken Wallace.

Several new professors have been appointed since the last issue of enginuity: Prof Andy Hopper in Communications, Prof Robert Mair in Civil Engineering, Prof Gehan Amaratunga in Electrical and Electronic Engineering, Prof Robin Langley in Mechanical Engineering, and Prof Peter Rayner in Signal Processing.

A new laboratory for Communications Engineering for Prof Hopper's group has just been built, and more new research accommodation will be completed in 1999.

A major expansion and refurbishment of the department library was completed during 1998, providing much-needed additional modern working space for students, as well as more space for books and journals.

The September CUEA conference on Engineering, Energy and Sustainability was very successful and attracted a large audience. In 1999, there will again be a one-day CUEA conference in September, and the department will hold an Open Day in the first week of July. Further details of these events and many other aspects of the department and its activities can be found on our website, http://www.eng.cam.ac.uk/
