First Chair in Chemical Engineering
The
first Shell Professor of Chemical Engineering was Terence Fox, a lecturer
in the Engineering Department.
As an undergraduate he had achieved the unique distinction of winning
the Rex Moir Prize for the best performance in the Mechanical Sciences
Tripos and three other prizes for the best performance in Thermodynamics,
Aeronautical Engineering and Structures in the same examination. The Chair
was endowed by Shell, and it was decided that this department should exist
as a separate entity.
