Another company was set up in 1915, called Engine Patents
Ltd, and it was under the banner of this company that Ricardo designed
and manufactured the engines for the Mk V tanks that made his name.
These engines were used not only for tanks during the First World
War, but also to provide power for workshops and hospitals. A total
of well over 8000 of his tank engines were put into military service,
making it the first British-designed automobile engine to be produced
in large numbers.
