Chapman was engaged by Bertram Hopkinson as an aide in 1904. He came
fresh from the Perse at the age of sixteen, and stayed in the Department
for fifty years. He became Secretary to the Department in 1931. He has
left a diary 'the events of fifty exciting years of my life, 1905-1955'
in which he notes the interview of the first lady student of engineering
in 1910 by Bertram Hopkinson.
